The purpose of graphic design is to communicate a message to a target audience and elicit a response. Whatever the device being designed, be it an ad, brochure, business card, package or website, its purpose is not to look nice but rather to deliver a concise, clear and convincing message to the viewer. Good design uses color, typeface, texture, photos or illustrations to add non-verbal understanding to the written message. Often this results in a device which is visually exciting and does look nice; sometimes, however, a really good design, one that truely acknowledges the audience and message, might not look like it's been designed at all. Whatever it takes to communicate the desired message to the necessary audience.
